Shining a Light on the Bulb Infographic

Lightbulb banner mockup.png

Concept
This infographic was created with the vision of a simplistic yet effective way of putting forth the information of how energy efficiency has changed throughout the years from the light bulb’s first conception to its most modern form with the purpose of educating an audience with little to no knowledge of these developments. The creation of the infographic was accompanied by two subsequent smaller posters to reflect similar ideas.

Project Rationale

In terms of typography, I went for a decorative font to give my design more of a fun and interesting take on a well-known object. My audience for this poster was for those at the ages 14-18 that would be in a school setting where learning is at the forefront of poster materials. My poster would be hung in a hallway, history, or science classroom where my intended audience would most likely e able to view it and be interested in the subject matter of the light bulb's invention history.

When choosing the color palette, I wanted the focus of my composition to be on the bright qualities of a light bulb, so using bright colors on an all black background would bring out the saturated colors of the whites, greens, and oranges. I felt that this would attract the attention of my audience better as well with the high contrast between the dark and light areas of the composition. In the info graphic, the use of the value scale of the light beams coming off of the bulbs signified the brightness of the bulbs over time (from dark to more saturated) as well as the brighter future the energy-saving bulbs of the present are today.

The main look of the design stemmed from the info graphic with my initial vision being a graphic that had a clean, modern look that used hierarchy to guide the viewer's interest from the natural reading order from left to right. This idea made its way onto the two subsequent posters that used backs and whites and lots of negative space around the outer edges of the composition to give off a scientific, industrial feel.
