Inky's Apiary Logo

Concept
I had the pleasure of designing a logo for the Inky's Apiary brand of honey and honey-related products. The client had initial ideas for a caricature of Ingrid (the "Inky" of Inky's Apiary) to be included on the label or having a focus on floral and bee-related imagery. In the end, the client decided to move forward with the floral direction coupled with serif font to give a classic look to their honey jars.

Project Rationale

Inky's Apiary is a local honey producer with only about three or less hives going at any given time. Most of their jars are given to family and friends along with occasionally running a booth at a local honey-selling event. Due to the small-town aspect of the business, I wanted to give this logo a timeless feel that would still be effective for many years to come. The classic serif font I chose gives that feeling. It is both easy to read, and also elegant enough to highlight the high-quality, natural product within the jar it is labeling.

In terms of color, I decided to keep this logo simple and stick with a grayscale palette. Knowing that this logo would be primarily displayed on honey jars, I wanted to highlight the amber color of the honey as much as possible. Keeping the logo in black and white lets the honey itself be the star of the product display.

As for the illustration aspect of the logo, I knew I wanted to include a honey bee along with floral elements to showcase the process of pollination that occurs to create honey. I liked the idea of keeping the bee and text as the central elements with the most attention by framing those elements with the floral accents in a circular shape. This also works well with the circular labels that are used on Inky's Apiary products.
